Earth sciences at SUNY Ulster comprise five major areas of study - geology, meteorology, oceanography, solar system astronomy, and physical geography. Geology is the study of the solid Earth and the processes which alter it over time, meteorology is the study of the Earth's atmosphere, weather, and climate, oceanography is the study of the Earth's oceans, solar system astronomy is the study of the celestial objects within our solar system, and physical geography is the study of the patterns and processes which occur on and affect the Earth's surface. Geography includes GIS (Geographic Information Science) which involves using computers as a tool to map geographic and scientific data.

Students may take earth science courses as a science elective according to their interests or as the first courses on a career path in science.

Any students who would like additional information about opportunities in the earth sciences are encouraged to speak with one of the faculty members. We would love to talk to you about it! You can also check out the John Burroughs Earth and Space Science Club on Campus.
