On behalf of the math faculty at SUNY Ulster, welcome! We are a dedicated team who make every effort to provide quality mathematics education to our students. Our goal is to motivate and inspire our students to learn and appreciate mathematics. We want to help you become successful at math!

We offer many opportunities for success. Our math courses range from Pre-Algebra through Calculus III. Free tutoriing is available for SUNY Ulster students on a drop-in basis at the Patrik Math Center.Online and peer tutoring is also available through the Learning Center. Additionally, our Learning Center houses many computer-assisted programs for math. Our math faculty continuously create video tutorials for their courses. A library of these tutorials is available through the Math Resources link.

Whether meeting specific degree or certificate requirements or to enable seamless transfer to four-year colleges or universities, our mission is to help you succeed. We can also advise you on Math Education transfer opportunities and requirements for both secondary and elementary education. Please stop by if we can be of help.

HOW MUCH MATH DO I HAVE TO TAKE?

The math courses you need to take depend on both your placement and your major. Below is link to a flowchart of our math sequence. It shows the progression of math courses based on prerequisites. Remeber, there are no shortcuts.

LIBERAL ARTS: MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE

The STEM Department offers an Associate in Science degree in Liberal Arts Mathematics and Science. Generally, students in this program intend to transfer to colleges granting the baccalaureate degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, or physics. A concentration in mathematics is designed to provide students with the first two years of study required to major in mathematics at the four-year college. We help you to build a foundation for specialization along many career paths. We recommend you download the planning sheet to design you schedule.

Math Placement

Everyone needs to take at least one math course to graduate. What math course is appropriate for you? When it comes to math, there are no shortcuts. Every math course builds on some foundation of knowledge, usually algebra. Skipping a level is detrimental. Our faculty strongly believe that all students must have prerequisite knowledge in order to succeed in a given math course. We want you to be successful and each of us is willing to help you start in the correct course. There are several things to consider. The first is the COMPASS® placement exam.
