-a thing to be valued in and for itself, like art or poetry."

The Math Team at SUNYUlster

The New York State Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) holds a math league competition each semester. The competition consists of a one-hour mathematics exam given at participating campus throughout the state. SUNY Ulster participates in this competition. What is the Math Team?

The Math Team  is a group of students representing SUNYUlster in the Math League Competition given by NYSMATYC. The coach, Jules Albertini, holds problem-solving sessions every Friday afternoon. The Math Team also participates in events such as Pizza and Cookie Day and a Math Lecture Series.

Why should I join?

Being a team member give you the opportunity to do math for fun.  There is no pressure. You can NOT hurt the team score, only help it! It looks great on a resume. It will help prepare you for math questions seen on entrance exams. You become part of a fun group and learn some different math and problem-solving techniques

Does it take a lot of my time?

NO! The team usually meets once a week to discuss problems and strategies, but there is no obligation. By joining the team you are committing only to take the state-wide one hour exam each semester.

About the exam

The state exam consists of 20 questions some of which are multiple choice and some are fill in the blank. No calculators are allowed. You earn four points for each correct answer and lose one point for each incorrect answer. No points are added or subtracted for a question left blank. The idea is to get as many correct as possible in one hour. Leave blanks when you have NO idea. Guess if you have it down to two possible answers.

"Small minds discuss persons. Average minds discuss events.     Great minds discuss ideas. Really great minds discuss mathematics."
